A study published Tuesday in the journalfound that a topical diclofenac gel may help reduce pain and inflammation in patients with arthritis.
Voltaren Emulgel, manufactured by Novartis Consumer Healthcare, is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that is applied to the skin to provide pain relief.
The study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, compared the arthritis-fighting effect of two topical diclofenac gel products, and found that Voltaren Emulgel significantly reduced pain and inflammation.
The two topical diclofenac gel products studied — a gel applied twice a day for arthritis pain and a gel twice daily for other pain-relief pain. The study was led by Dr. David A. Schulman of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
Both the Voltaren Emulgel and Voltaren Emulgel Gel, manufactured by Novartis Consumer Healthcare, are anti-inflammatory drugs that are used to treat arthritis and other inflammatory conditions.
“Both these products are clinically effective and safe,” said Schulman, adding that the research is ongoing.
“We’re continuing to study these products to see what works,” he added.
The researchers also noted that the topical diclofenac gel was more expensive than the oral diclofenac gel and that the topical gel was not designed to be taken directly from the gel.
Voltaren Emulgel and Voltaren Emulgel Gel are FDA-approved products that contain diclofenac sodium, which is the active ingredient in Voltaren Emulgel. The oral diclofenac gel is used to treat arthritis pain and is used to relieve pain.
